How To Become A Political Celebrity In Nigerian Politics (Part 1)
Becoming a household name in Nigerian politics is no easy feat. You need to have money in your family, bow to a political godfather or be a thug to make a name. There is however a new breed of politicians emerging who are using modern technology and old-school psychology to rise in politics. They are political celebs. In this two part series, we will take a look at their methods.
- Share money to people on the streets and film yourself doing it. Take the video of you helping a poor child selling on the streets and share it on social media. Caption the video as you are helping the poor. Our people are sentimental, they flock to anyone who pretends to be a philanthropist without asking what the person’s motive is. History is littered with men who have pretended to mean well and lie their way to the top.
- Fake it. We live in an era where people pretend to be what they are not, Remember the IG blogger who went to pose with Onye Eze’s house and claimed to the whole world that it was hers? To rise in politics, you make them think you already have more than enough. That way, the people truly believe that you are not interested in embezzling their money.
- Network. The importance of networking cannot be overemphasized. It is an opportunity to meet people. Be sure to take pics and share online. This is proof that you know the right people and are well connected.
- Show the people that you are religious. This is one area that is close to the heart of most Nigerians. We love devout leaders. Even though many of our people play church and go to Mosque out of obligation not devotion, we have a higher expectation with regards to our leaders. Therefore, to appeal our people, you should have an appearance of a religious person. What you do behind closed doors is left to you.
