The US visa ban played a key role in the success of the Edo Election – Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has attributed the success of the just concluded Edo election to the threat to place a visa ban on anyone found guilty of electoral fraud or rigging.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Wike said the act made people behave themselves. He also urged that the ban should be extended to security agencies so every one sits up and avoids jeopardizing their children’s future.
“One thing that played out and which I noticed was the role of the international community. For example, the US, the UK came out and said that there would be a visa ban if anybody tries anything in terms of violence or rigging and they have gone further to ban some governors,” he said.

“Everybody was being careful, saying, I don’t want to have any problem, I don’t want my children and family to have any problem. We all go to the UK everytime.

“Infact they should even go further, not only politicians, but security agencies, then you’ll see everybody will sit up and say look, I cannot jeopardize the future of my children and mine, simply because you want me to rig the election, so it’s very key”.

The governor also spoke about the role of the Inspector General of Police in the elections, saying he tried to force him (Wike) to leave the state.

“First of all, the IG’s role as far as I’m concerned as it relates to me, has to do with someone who has had a premeditated view about me because the IG never saw me outside. I was inside my room and I got a call from the IG, that I must leave Edo State.

“What surprised me was that I am the Chairman of the campaign council so why should I leave. And as chairman you must monitor what is going on so that at the end of the day, you’ll be able to write your report to the party,” he explained.

  1. One thing that played out and which I noticed was the role of the international community. For example, the US, the UK came out and said that there would be a visa ban if anybody tries anything in terms of violence or rigging and the edo election will be as elected with wike.

  2. It play a very big role in Edo state election. The reason is that…look at oshiomole he want to do and undo by fire by false but he think of his family…wife and children’s, he would have do something worse in the election, he has been arranging some thugs for the election before, but do to the visa ban, he dont want to risk his family life. I think wike has a big point, the same things we happen in ondo state coming election in favour of PDP.

  3. Though, US and UK may play big role in this last election but also let us also give thanks to PMB for not compromising the election. If our subsequent elections could be like this we won’t be complaining that our votes do not count.

  4. In a first instance, why do politicians deny citizens their right to vote for the people of their choice or party? That is wickedness, thanks to UK and US for coming out with those law or ban if not there would be a lot of blood in that election but with the ban everything went on peacefully. Nigerian politicians should also known that to attain any political post should not be do or die affairs.

  5. Yessooo the visa ban from U.K. and USA is the main reason that facilitated the wining of the people’s Democratic Party in Edo state
People behaved themselves and tried to do things right do that the U.K. will not slam the ban on them too
I suggest that the U.K. extends this ban on all activities in Nigeria unto any one found doing things abnormally
This will help to restore this country that has been totally battered by our politicians
The inspector general of police had no right to tell Wike to live his room in Edo since he did not come out

  6. The Lion himself, you are very correct because if not for the Visa Ban I don’t know what would have been the fate of Obaseki and the people of Edo State. How I wish it will remain like that, Since we can’t control ourselves except outsiders don’t come in.

  7. Now the truth is coming out. If the international community does not impose visa ban on anyone or group that tries to disrupt the election, I am very sure the APC will do everything possible to rig the election.
Until Nigeria becomes a place, the international community serves as a watchdog.
