The Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, have instructed the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to halt the newly introduced Police unit, SWAT and fish out the policemen responsible for the deaths of #EndSARS protesters across the country.

NGF comprising Governors of the 36 states of the federation, made the call following the nationwide protests against police brutality.

In a communique signed by the chairman of the NGF and Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Governors also accused the IGP of not consulting widely before dissolving the controversial police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad and replacing with newly formed Special Weapons And Tactics.

“Governors were unanimous in their support for the IGP and endorsed his plan to carry out far-reaching reforms geared towards greater effectiveness, accountability and transparency; Members called for increased regularity in the meetings of the Nigeria Police Council in order for it to effectively carry out its regulatory and supervisory roles as contained in the Nigerian Constitution.

“On the IGP’s plan to create SWAT, Governors stated that even though the effort might be necessary and in good faith, they argued that the timing is inauspicious as the mood of the nation negates it and may understandably be misinterpreted as a surreptitious move to dress FSARS in another garb;

“Governors agreed that there was need for greater consultation with the public before any decision is take. Governors advised the IGP to immediately convene a meeting of all stakeholders and agree on a format of engagement with all State officials in order to address concerns; and that State leadership should meet simultaneously nationwide, to address matters arising

“Governors emphasized that reforms must include the training and retraining of operatives on the rules of engagement with the general public; Policing in Nigeria must ensure freedom for all Nigerians to carry out their lawful and legitimate businesses anywhere in the country without fear of harassment, intimidation or molestation;

“Governors advised that throughout the reform process, the room for consultation may include sessions and direct feedback from the public, stressing that there is no single solution that applies to all the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory

” Governors were unequivocal that all police officers who participated in the abuse or actions that might have led to injury or the death of innocent citizens must be fished out and brought to book while other Nigerians who have been adversely affected by police brutality or other actions that were injurious to them or their loved ones, should be compensated.

“Each State is to set up a panel for compensation to all victims and see to it that the necessary compensation is made to those who deserve them. This must be systematically done to ensure that nobody who deserves to be compensated, is left out.

“The Forum directed its Secretariat to work with the police authority to develop a framework for setting up a panel of enquiry across all States to determine claims and compensation; Governors are aware that some States have already started engaging protesters and urged all States that have not commenced same to invite all stakeholders in the matter to resolve these issues

“Members also recommended that the IGP, the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Council should immediately review the Remuneration and Emoluments of police officers and explore ways to fund this in order to incentivize and motivate police officers who have pledged themselves in service of the country.

“Governors enjoined the IGP to be ready to forge stronger partnerships with State governments and the civil society to improve civil relations between the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Public”

  1. The only way to stop the ongoing protest is to fetch out those SARS and other police men who had killed the innocent citizens of this country and bring them to book. We want Justice for the live of the individual who had been killed by police brutality.

  2. O have once said it in my previous comment that can a leopard change its spot? Nigerians are complaining about the brutality of SARS and police at Large and you have not addressed the issue at hand and you are coming out with another name, this is uncalled for. At least, something must be done first on those ones before creating another.

  3. That will be good… They need to be punished severely and then send to fight terrorist in northern part of the country intead of them wasting and disturbing the lives of innocent civilians.

  4. We may not be in power but we are all government together at the moment everything is heating up instead of cooling the temper, you are still putting fire, you better talk to IGP to talk to his boys, orientate them before taking any steps further.

  5. That’s good motion by the NGF, They should set up disciplinary committee that will firstly look into err police officers and sanction those of them who were guilt of the said allegations without that police will continue their brutality on the citizens without looking back.

  6. Are you serious like is it Nigerian Governors saying this?
    Wow!!! This is lovely, I love this

    with an immediate effect.

  7. how will u identify the bad once because they s not written in the face so the best for s just ask all the SARS officials to go home nd put new people with new idea logy simply

  8. All these are too late because even you Governors, no one trusts you people
    All of you in government whether past or present have failed us

  9. This is the way to go about this issue… How can you bring up SWAT in a hurry when the berived family is left just like that

  10. They are equally asking him to prolong the evil days I guess.??? such call won’t stop the agitation, these people sees the masses as fools, I think every aspect of bad leadership in Nigeria should be touched, even NLC,PHCN,NNPC,BANKS criminal charges, NCC,NCDC, and the rest.

  11. The souls of those innocent citizen will hunt there killers,they don’t need to fish them,the innocent souls will fish them out.
