Use your firearm when your life is in danger – IGP, Adamu Mohammed tells Police Officers

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has advised police officers to only use their firearms to protect themselves whenever they are in the face of any form of danger.

He gave the advice while addressing police officers recently. The Police chief is currently on a tour to different state commands to assess the level of destruction each command suffered during the civil unrest that broke out across the country after hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protests. Several police officers were killed and many stations destroyed in the wake of the unrest.

“All that happened in terms of attacks on the police and police stations, should not stop us from coming out to perform our constitutional duties. But while we are performing this constitutional duties, we must also protect ourselves because every policeman is a human being and is also entitled to human rights protection.

“Don’t forget your force order 237. You read and digest it very well. You know when you should use your firearms. You use your firearms in a lawful manner.

”One of the ways you use your firearms is when your life is in danger and there is no other way through, then you use your firearms. Does it make sense for a policeman to die when he is carrying a rifle?, he said

  1. Mhhhhh!!!
I smell foul from this your advice sir
I hope that what led to end SARS protest will not start repeating itself..o
Our officers in force in Nigeria don’t behave well…o so make sure you give them nice orientation

  2. If there’s no issues no one will dearly engage policemen in fighting, therefore, they should trend softly about using weapons against Citizens.

  3. Are you trying guarantee them to kill any citizen, because Nigeria police are not like how you briefly statement like this…they will over reacted as you mentioned.

  4. Sorry is this coming from the IG himself, did he just made that statement? We are complaining of their misused of arms without permission and now the IG is given them a go ahead to kill the innocent citizens who they are to protect.

  5. What I could deduce from your statement is that police should be shooting unharmed citizens because if any argument occur they will term it negatively.

  6. Then, what would you tell the unharmed citizens to do, if they also molested or harassed by the policemen because police can go to any length to claim that people wants to fight them.

  7. The advice you gave to them is very very dangerous, if any slight argument occur the Nigerian policemen and citizens they might bring out their gun and fire. You better think twice for this advice.
