Seun Kuti leads Prayer Session in prison, inmates crown him ”General Overseer”

Seun Kuti, the embattled Afrobeat singer and son of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been proclaimed the “General Overseer” of his prison cell by the inmates at the State Criminal, Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos. This development occurred after some initial resistance from the inmates.

According to Vanguard, Seun was given a copy of the Holy Bible as a symbol of his office. However, when he was initially placed in the cell with other detainees, the inmates rejected him, leading to a commotion and demands for his removal. The situation intensified, but Seun managed to defuse the tension by promising to provide the inmates with ₦25,000. He contacted his wife, who promptly delivered the money. Subsequently, the inmates accepted him and provided him with a place to sit.

Seun, disappointed by the ordeal, initially went on a hunger strike, refusing to eat the food provided, including that brought by his wife. However, after nearly a day and a half, he eventually began to eat. Interestingly, the inmates later bestowed upon him the title of General Overseer of the cell, and a Bible was presented to him. He now leads prayer sessions for the inmates whenever necessary, and they respond by chanting “GO, GO.”

Seun was seen clutching the Bible tightly with his left hand while climbing the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge, Waheed Ayilara, on Friday afternoon. He was later led down the stairs and back into the cell.
