Renaming the Second Niger Bridge after Buhari should not be allowed. The bridge must be renamed with a meritorious Igbo name – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has expressed their disapproval of naming the Second Niger Bridge after President Buhari, stating that it should instead bear the name of a prominent Igbo figure.

During the bridge’s commissioning on Tuesday, May 23, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, announced that, following consultations, the South-East governors had agreed to name the bridge after President Buhari.

However, in a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group argued that this decision by the South-East governors amounted to a betrayal of the region’s people. They insisted that the bridge should be named after a notable Igbo individual, not the President.

The statement read, “The bridge should bear the name of Dr. Alex Ekweueme, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, Dr. Sam Mbakwe, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Col. Achuzie, or any other deserving Igbo figure that anyone can suggest. Renaming the Second Niger Bridge after Buhari should not be allowed. The bridge must be renamed with a meritorious Igbo name.”
