I did research on Burna Boy before coming to Nigeria. I met Davido and Wizkid the last time I was here – Bill Gates

Mr. Bill Gates, the co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shared an anecdote about a conversation he had with his daughter, Phoebe, before his visit to Nigeria.

Gates during his opening address at the “Advancing Africa: Unleashing the Power of Youth in Science and Innovation” event in Lagos State recalled how Phoebe expressed excitement and mentioned that he would be fortunate to witness performances by Nigerian Afrobeats artists, specifically Burna Boy and Rema, during his time in Nigeria.

Highlighting the global recognition and popularity of Afrobeats music originating from Nigeria, the Microsoft co-founder acknowledged its widespread appeal across the world.

He said, “Of course, being here in Nigeria, I can’t help but mention the amazing creativity that goes on here.

“Afrobeats from Nigeria are popular everywhere. When my daughter Phoebe heard I was coming to Nigeria, she said, ‘You’re lucky to go see Burna Boy and Rema.’”

Gates also recalled how he saw Davido and Wizkid perform during his last visit to the country.

“But I also remember, the last time I was here, I did get to see Davido and Wizkid perform and I was quite impressed with that. So, my kids think I’ve come to a very hip place,” he added.
