We don’t consider the ethnic or religious background of those defaulting our laws – Sanwo Olu speaks on demolished buildings in Lagos state

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted claims regarding the involvement of ethnicity and religion in the recent demolition of buildings within the state.

Amid allegations, Sanwo-Olu’s administration faces criticism for purportedly singling out and demolishing markets and structures predominantly inhabited by Igbo communities in the state. The governor has been accused of pursuing a vendetta, allegedly in response to the voting pattern of Igbo residents who supported the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the previous election.

Sanwo-Olu clarified that only structures found to be in violation of state laws are subject to demolition.

Addressing the matter during a live media session titled ‘Sanwo Speaks,’ the governor emphasized that the demolition activities in the state are devoid of any ethnic or religious bias.

He said: “We only remove the structures of those that contravened the State’s building and development laws. We don’t consider the ethnic or religious background of those defaulting our laws. We cannot compromise the laws; we need to rescue the city.”
