It is not uncommon for children of world leaders to accompany their parents on foreign trips. it is the norm – Senior Special Assistant on Digital/ New Media to President Tinubu

O’Tega Ogra, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital/New Media to President Tinubu, has responded to criticism from Nigerians regarding the inclusion of President Tinubu’s sons, Seyi and Yinka, in the delegation for the upcoming state visit to Qatar in March.

On Tuesday, February 27, Nigerians expressed their disapproval on social media platforms, condemning the government’s decision to include Seyi and Yinka’s names in the 38-person delegation accompanying President Tinubu on the trip.

In response to the criticism from Nigerians, O’Tega defended the practice by pointing out that the offspring of global leaders often accompany their parents on official visits. Drawing comparisons, he highlighted instances where figures like the Obamas and Clintons traveled with their children on similar occasions. He further elaborated that for certain leaders, such trips serve as educational opportunities to expose their children to international affairs and diverse cultures. Additionally, he noted that some leaders opt for this approach to uphold a sense of family life amidst the responsibilities of public office, as well as for security reasons.

His post reads

‘’It is not uncommon for children of world leaders to accompany their parents on foreign trips. In fact, it is the norm. Canadian PM Trudeau is known to travel with his family on official trips abroad. Same with UK PMs – even if somewhat muted.

From the public image and diplomacy angle, bringing family members can soften a leader’s public image and aid in diplomatic relations by showcasing a relatable, family-oriented side.

For some leaders, taking their children on such trips is a way of educating them about world affairs and different cultures. Others do it to maintain some semblance of family life, despite the demands of public office, and for security considerations.

The Obamas, Clintons, Bushs, Trumps and others went on tons of foreign trips whilst in office with their families.

We really need to stop majoring in minors in the name of castigating everything.”
