Chinese man sentenced to death by hanging for killing Nigerian girlfriend in Kano

A Chinese man identified as Geng Quandong was sentenced to death by hanging by the Kano State High Court on March 26. Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji presided over the case at Miller Road, Bompai, convicting Quandong for the murder of his girlfriend, Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, also known as Ummita.

Quandong invaded Ummita’s family residence on September 16, 2022, and fatally stabbed her during an argument. He fled but was later arrested and charged. During the trial, it was revealed that Quandong forcibly entered the house, pushing Ummita’s mother aside before attacking Ummita in her room.

Quandong claimed Ummita’s marriage to another person caused him heartbreak, despite their plans to marry. He alleged spending significant amounts on wedding preparations, including expensive dresses and currency for the ceremony. Quandong accused Ummita of deception, claiming she continued soliciting money from him even after her marriage to someone else, arranging meetings during her visits to Kano.

He said he bought her gold worth N5 million and gave her N6 million to process her certificate at Sokoto University and N1 million to install the solar system in their house.

He had said, “Besides huge amounts of money I used to spend on her, I used to take her out to places like Bristol Palace and Central Hotel to eat food.

“I bought her house worth N4 million, a car worth N10 million. N18 million as capital to start business, and spent N500,000 worth of bags and shoes on her new shop and N1 million worth of laces and wrappers and a house in Abuja which she started building.”
