NERC denies approval of 50% increase in electricity tariffs

The Nigeria Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) has denied claims that there has been an increase by 50% in electricity tariff.

This was in a statement released on Tuesday via the official Twitter handle of the commission. It said that no approval has been granted for a 50% tariff increase for electricity distribution companies, which took effect on January 1, 2021.

The commission also directed customers that have been affected by any rate increases beyond the above provision of the tariff Order to report to the Commission at customer.complaints@nerc.gov.ng

The statement reads;

“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to publications in the print and electronic media misinforming electricity consumers that the Commission has approved a 50% increase in electricity tariffs.

“The Commission hereby state that NO approval has been granted for a 50% tariff increase in the electricity distribution companies which took effect on January 1, 2021.

“However, the tariff for customers on service bands D & E (customers that are being served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day over a period of one month) remains frozen in line with the policy direction of the FG.

“In compliance with the provisions of the EPSR act, the rates for service bands A, B, C, D and E have been adjusted by NGN2.00 to NGN4.00 per kWhr.

“Also, the media is hereby requested to retract their earlier publications misinforming electricity consumers about a purported 50% increase in electricity tariffs.

“Any customer that has been impacted by any rate increases beyond the above provision of the tariff Order should report to the Commission at customer.complaints@nerc.gov.ng,” the statement said.

  1. I don’t blame you people na, you found yourselfs in a clueless government, that has no direction
    That is why you people can act anyhow and get away with it. Are you people saying that discussion didn’t happen in your office before some criminals among you carried it out.

  2. Why denied it because the money you are bringing for months now have increased 100% even not 50% as the rumor claims.

  3. It’s better you do because what we are facing now is beyond increasing electricity tariff, average Nigerians could not afford three square meals per day. This is bad.

  4. We are waiting for this month bill, we will now know wether you have increased it or not but for now no comment.

  5. If you increase the electricity tariff now that means the president buhari’s administration just intentionally inflict pains in her citizens.

  6. Nigeria have since ceased to amaze me. A country where no one seems to be in charge. If Nerc is unaware of electricity bill increase, the behives they are not aware of the happening with the commission they are in charge
    A friend if mine that used to receive 5k bill was served 15k bill and he was complaining bitterly. As for me, I have since disconnected my household with anything Eedc or phcn or NEPA or whatever they are called. I make use of Solar Energy and have my peace of mind
