Religionists twisted Kukah’s Christmas Speech – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has thrown his weight behind Bishop Kukah and his controversial Christmas message.

The writer averred that no part of the comment made by Bishop Kukah against President Muhammadu Buhari denigrated Islam.

Soyinka made this known in a statement on Monday titled, “The Kukah offence and ongoing offensives.” He expressed that the calls by some Muslim fanatics that the Bishop should apologize or leave Sokoto were unacceptable.

According to the Nobel Laureate, “it should not come as a surprise that a section of the Islamic community, not only claimed to have found offence in Father Kukah’s New Year address, what is bothersome, even unwholesome, is the embedded threat to storm his ‘Capitol’ and eject him, simply for ‘speaking in tongues.”

“Any pluralistic society must emphatically declare such a response unacceptable. On a personal note, I have studied the transcript as reported in the media and found nothing in it that denigrates Islam but then, I must confess, I am not among the most religion besotted inhabitants of the globe. That, I have been told, disqualifies me from even commenting on the subject and, quite frankly, I wish that were indeed the case,” the statement partly read.

He noted that Kukah’s Christmas message, and the ensuing offensives, could not be more fortuitous, coming at a time “when a world powerful nation, still reeling from an unprecedented assault on her corporate definition, is now poised to set, at the very least, a symbolic seal on her commitment to the democratic ideal.”

  1. Some religionists just want to make use of the bishop kukah statement to create chaos or religious problem in the country.

  2. That’s what said in my previous comment, instead of allow president buhari to tackle the identify areas of bishop kukah they are attacking him.

  3. Kukah is an intelligent man who can never deliberately demean another faith for no reason. Its only, illiterates who lack the intelligence to decipher his message that areaking noise all over the place. The learned professor has lent his voice on the issue and found nothing derogatory as to warrant the attack on Bishop, Kukah so do all learned men who took time to go through that his message that have been generating heat from myopic religious bigots
