“We are not aware” – CBN reacts to Gov Obaseki’s claim of printing N60 billion for states

The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning have said they are not aware of any N50-N60 billion naira that was printed and disbursed to states to cushion the economic meltdown in the states as claimed by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Governor Obaseki at a meeting in Edo last week alleged that the Federal government printed between 50-N60bn to augment what the three tiers of government shared in March. He had said, “When we got FAAC for March, the federal government printed additional N50-N60 billion to top-up for us to share, this April, we will go to Abuja and share. By the end of this year, our total borrowings is going to be within N15-N16 trillion. Imagine a family that is just borrowing without any means to pay back and nobody is looking at that, everybody is looking at 2023, everybody is blaming Mr. President as if he is a magician”

Reacting to this in an interview with newsmen over the weekend, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Apex bank, Osita Nwanisobi, said he is not aware of any money printed. “I am not aware of that (N60bn printed by the government,” Nwanisobi stated. Also when contacted for his comments, Yunusa Abdullahi, the media aide to the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, asked that such questions should be directed to the CBN or the governor who made the claim.
