Tinubu Outlines Agenda for Nigeria after phone call with US Secretary Blinken

President-elect Bola Tinubu has pledged to swiftly take action and foster unity in Nigeria, while also ensuring positive relations with the United States. In a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday night, Tinubu conveyed his commitment to implementing institutional reforms and development programs aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and providing assistance to underprivileged Nigerians.

Tinubu expressed his determination to enhance Nigeria’s democracy and serve the people faithfully as their president, as stated by his spokesperson Tunde Rahman. Reflecting on his time in America during the 1970s, where he obtained an accounting degree with honors in 1979, Tinubu shared his experience of seeking asylum in the US due to his unwavering fight for democracy in Nigeria during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Affirming his democratic legitimacy, Tinubu firmly believed that the election results, which clearly favored him, represented the will of the Nigerian people. He emphasized his commitment to national unity and ensuring the happiness and well-being of Nigerians through democratic governance.

Recognizing Nigeria’s significant role in Africa, Tinubu urged the US to consider the country’s importance and provide support in the areas of security and economic investment. He emphasized that Nigeria’s progress and leadership would have a positive ripple effect on the entire continent.

Secretary Blinken assured Tinubu of a mutually beneficial relationship between Nigeria and the US. He pledged to contribute to a sustained and amicable partnership between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of a democratic and peaceful Nigeria for both the United States and Africa as a whole.
