Bulkachuwa asks Court to stop ICPC from probing him over alleged “judicial interference “

Adamu Bulkachuwa, the former senator who previously represented the Bauchi North Senatorial District, has filed a request with the Federal High Court in Abuja to seek limitations on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) from conducting investigations and making arrests against him.

The revelation of his confession had sparked a significant controversy throughout Nigeria.

Following the public outcry that followed the disclosure, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) urged both the police and the ICPC to conduct an investigation into the senator.

In accordance with its responsibility to probe corrupt activities, the ICPC summoned the senator for interrogation.

Upon receiving the ICPC’s invitation, Bulkachuwa, represented by his lawyer Donald Ajibowu, requested a rescheduling of his appearance to 6 July, citing health concerns.

However, three days ahead of the rescheduled date, Bulkachuwa filed a suit urging the court to bar the agency from investigating him.

The former lawmaker is seeking a judicial interpretation of Section 1 of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act 2017, which confers immunity on him from any civil or criminal litigation in respect of any utterance he makes on the floor of the Senate in his capacity as a serving Senator.

He implored the court to declare his summons as “illegal, arbitrary, oppressive, unconstitutional, and a severe violation that could potentially persistently infringe upon the applicant’s fundamental human rights, as protected by Sections 34, 35, 36, 37, 41, and 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”
