Confusion hits Senate over Keyamo’s ministerial screening

Controversy surrounds the Senate’s consideration of Festus Keyamo, a ministerial nominee, leading to a dissolution of the Chamber into an executive session. Prior to this, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi, the Senate leader, moved a motion which resulted in confusion. Keyamo had been asked to present his qualifications and reasons for being a Minister of Nigeria.

However, chaos ensued when Senator Darlington Nwokocha raised concerns about constitutional violations by Keyamo during his time as Minister of State for Employment, Labour, and Productivity. Nwokocha detailed how Keyamo obstructed the Reps Committee’s oversight of N52 billion allocated to his Ministry.

Consequently, Nwokocha moved for the screening to be postponed based on parliamentary rules, with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe supporting the motion. Amid the commotion, the Senate President suggested an executive session, during which the nominee was escorted out by the Sergent-At-Arms.
