Social media will trigger a civil war in our country – Bayo Onanuga calls for regulation

Bayo Onanuga, a previous media advisor to President Bola Tinubu, has urged for immediate regulation of the social media sphere. He expressed concern that the spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms could potentially incite another civil conflict in Nigeria.

He voiced this appeal in response to conflicting accounts regarding the ruling of the Kaduna governorship election tribunal. Onanuga bemoaned a particular report suggesting that the Kaduna governorship election had been declared inconclusive while the tribunal was still in the process of delivering its judgment.

He said; “Social media need to be regulated urgently. So many spurious reports today about the Kaduna governorship verdict by the Election Tribunal.

“The most notoriously shared headline: “Kaduna governorship election declared inconclusive.” This was circulating while the tribunal was still reading its judgment.

“There should be some control in the social media space, otherwise the misinformation and disinformation being disseminated will one day trigger a civil war in our country.”
