Tokyo 2020: With new levels come new devils – Enekwechi reacts to losing Shotput final

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, has reacted after he lost at the final of the men’s shot put event at the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in Japan.

The 28-year-old said he appreciates the love and support he has received the past days. According to him, with new levels come new devils.

He further stated that he would return to Nigeria to figure out his next year’s living and training situations.

Enekwechi, who threw 21.28 metres to win the 2019 African Games gold in Rabat, could only record a throw of 19.74 to place last on Thursday in the 12-man field.

Ryan Crouser of the United States set a new Olympic record in the event with a throw of 23.30.

Crouser who is also the world record-holder with 23.37, set on June 18, erased his Olympic record of 22.52 set at the Rio Games in 2016.

Reacting, Enekwechi, in a post via his Instagram account, said, “12th place at the #Olympic Games. I’m okay with it because this has been a very trying couple of weeks.

“I’m happy to have made the Olympic Games but I know there are some things I could have done to make the story end a little bit sweeter.

“I picked a bad day to have a bad day. This is the first time I had literally thousands of people behind me watching me compete. With new levels come new devils. As overwhelming as it’s been the past couple of months, I do appreciate the love and support.

“I still have a few days left in Japan to do some shopping and decompress a bit before I go back home to figure out next year’s living and training situations. Yep, there’s a next year. Stay tuned.”
