7 ways to Prevent Snake in your Toilet

Private spaces where people feel comfortable such as the bathroom can end up being a dangerous place. Naturally, snakes tend to have their nest in the backyard or narrow areas outside the house. But with the evolution of the snake which has adapted in various areas, an unexpectedly occurrence of a snake in toilet.

Reactions have emerged following the death of Air Force Personnel, Lance Corporal Ogah Bercy, who died of complications from snakebite in her toilet at the NAF Base Bill Clinton Drive Abuja.

Questions on how snakes and other reptiles manage to enter our bathrooms and toilets have been raised and asked by many across social media.

It is uncommon for snakes to be found in toilets. Snakes have been found predominantly under houses such as the recent find in California or in a roof cavity than in the toilet but however, snakes can get into a toilet through an opening in the sewer.

How to get rid of Snakes?

1) Eliminate snake food sources. Regularly clean the house from cluttered areas, remove waste, make the house free from musty smell, to avoid dirty animals like rat, lizard, gecko from entering the house.

2) Use household items such as caustic soda, pour it inside the toilet to prevent snake appearing in the toilet and solve problem that prevent snake from entering the house such as sulfur powder, kerosene mix with water and pour it around the drainage area (if squat toilet) or entrance of the house.

3) Always check the hole or the vulnerability is where the snake can crawl into the house especially the area around the drain or leak from septic tank because it is the main source of snake that can slip into the house without knowing it. If there is a risk, then you should hurry or shut the hole immediately.

4) Keep windows and sliding doors in the bathroom closed or ensure the screens are fully intact so a snake can’t slide its way in.

5) Always make sure that all the bushes around your house are properly cleared and well burnt so as to prevent any rodents or reptiles from harboring around the house.

6) Keep your toilet lid closed regularly and you can also make use of a flat tile to cover your bathroom filter when you’re not in the bathroom so as to stop any further movement of the reptile through the pipes and also ensure that all pipes are well fixed and closed.

7) Finally, always make sure you check inside your toilet sink before you sit on it, avoid using the toilet in the dark especially public restrooms. If you must use them, don’t sit directly on them, lift up your buttock slightly above the bowl and be watchful.
