Court grants Seun Kuti bail, gives Police 48 hours to conclude investigation

Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has been granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Yaba on Tuesday.

As part of the bail conditions, the defendant is required to present two sureties who own landed properties in Lagos State.

Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun also instructed the police to conclude their investigation within 48 hours.

Seun Kuti faced charges of assaulting a police officer, which is an offense under Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act.

The police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, requested the court to remand the defendant for 21 days, allowing the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) time to prepare legal advice.

However, the defense counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), opposed the request in his argument.

Olumide-Fusika pleaded with the court not to remand his client, asserting that he had not been informed about any application to that effect.

Seun was arrested after allegedly slapping an officer when his vehicle was stopped on Third Mainland Bridge.

During questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, Kuti chose not to provide a statement.

His lawyer expressed concern that police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin had assumed the role of Investigating Police Officer (IPO) by sharing investigative details in the media
