Nigerians are often very united when they are abroad, but something else when they return – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated that Nigerians exhibit more unity when they are outside the country, but unfortunately, they tend to act as adversaries when in their homeland. Impressed by the cohesive nature displayed by Nigerians in the United States, Obasanjo urged Nigerians residing abroad to demonstrate the same sense of togetherness when they return home.

He conveyed this message while representing a delegation comprising distinguished traditional leaders and academics, including the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, during an evening reception held in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo commended Nigerians in the diaspora for bringing pride to their country through their accomplishments in various fields. He encouraged them to be exemplary citizens wherever they reside, not only when they are outside Nigeria but also upon their return home.

“Nigerian nationals are often very united when they are abroad, but something else when they return to the country,” Obasanjo had said.

The Balogun Owu expressed gratitude to the Rutgers University management for warmly welcoming the delegation and facilitating meaningful engagements.
