Senate rejects motion seeking to release Nnamdi Kanu

The Nigerian Senate has turned down a motion aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The motion, titled “Condemning the disruptive nature of sit-at-home Demonstrations in south-east Nigeria,” was put forward by Osita Izunaso, a senator representing Imo under the All Progressives Congress (APC). All other senators from the southeast region also co-sponsored the motion.

In his presentation, Senator Izunaso highlighted the negative consequences of IPOB’s sit-at-home order, including the forced departure of investors from the region, the loss of numerous innocent lives, and the destruction of properties worth over a trillion naira.

Furthermore, the senator pointed out that the order has disrupted the education of students and resulted in violent clashes with law enforcement agencies. He expressed concern about the activities of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed follower of Kanu, who is issuing illegal sit-at-home orders and potentially influencing Nigerian youths against the government.

The Senate paid tribute to those who lost their lives due to the sit-at-home activities and observed a minute of silence in their honor. However, they declined the request for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, citing that the matter is still in court.
