Lawyer and father-in-law arraigned by EFCC for forgery

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Alaba Alakija and his daughter-in-law, Oyinkansola Alakija, before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on an amended two-count charge related to alleged conspiracy and using false documents.

The charges stemmed from an incident in 2015 involving the use of a falsified document concerning property ownership. Both defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

The prosecution counsel requested a trial date and the remand of the defendants in a correctional facility, which was granted.

Counsel for the first defendant filed a bail application, while counsel for the second defendant requested to orally present the bail application, citing time constraints and personal circumstances. However, there was a discrepancy regarding the age of the second defendant’s baby.

Justice Dada granted bail to the first defendant in the sum of N10 million, with sureties required to submit their international passports to the court. The passport of the second defendant was taken into possession by the court.

Both defendants were released to their lawyers pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions. The trial is scheduled to commence on May 28, 2024.
