Accepting grains from Ukraine does not make Nigeria a failed country – FG counters Peter Obi

The Federal government has emphasized that accepting grains from Ukraine does not indicate that Nigeria is a failed country. Recently, it was reported that Ukraine donated 25,000 tons of wheat to Nigeria, aiming to address the urgent food crisis impacting over 1.3 million people in northeast Nigeria.

In response to this news, Obi, in a statement issued on Monday, acknowledged Ukraine’s commendable gesture. He highlighted the contrast between Ukraine, engaged in a severe conflict with Russia, yet still extending aid, and Nigeria, which despite being at peace, faces challenges due to poor leadership.

Reacting to Obi’s remarks, the Minister of Information and National Orientation countered, asserting that Nigeria receiving food assistance from Ukraine does not imply that Nigeria is a failed state.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, March 6, the Minister said;

‘’Egypt gets about 60 per cent of its grains from Ukraine. The fact that Egypt gets about 60 per cent of its grains from Ukraine does not make it a failed state.

The fact that we are having challenges at the moment does not make Nigeria a failed state.

Therefore, accepting grains from Ukraine does not make Nigeria or Egypt a failed country.

“It is a normal thing because countries exist to depend on one another.’’
