Supreme Court dismisses PDP suit against Tinubu, Shettima

The inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima has received the judicial seal of approval from the Supreme Court.

On Friday, the Court dismissed a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking the disqualification of Tinubu and Shettima from the 2023 presidential election.

The Apex Court declared that the PDP’s suit lacked merit and held that the party had no jurisdiction to initiate such a case. Justice Adamu Jauro, delivering the lead judgment, criticized the PDP for interfering in the internal affairs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and imposed a fine of N2 million on the PDP.

Justice Jauro concurred with Tinubu’s lawyer, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, that the PDP unjustly meddled in the affairs of the APC and acted as a busybody. The Supreme Court also agreed that the PDP failed to provide any evidence of double nomination by Vice President-elect Shettima, describing the PDP’s claim as a deliberate attempt to mislead the Court and the nation.

Furthermore, the Court acknowledged Fagbemi’s argument that regardless of the PDP’s dissatisfaction with how the APC conducted its primary elections and nominated its candidates, the PDP should remain a mere observer.

The Court condemned the PDP for using social media to set a trap for the Supreme Court and blackmail it, deeming this action as unfortunate, unwarranted, and uncalled for.
