EFCC proposes N2.6 billion for vehicles, demands extra N33 billion allocation in 2024 budget

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally requested the National Assembly to increase its 2024 budget from N43 billion to N76 billion. The request, presented by Chairman Ola Olukoyede in a budget synopsis to the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes on December 5, outlines the EFCC’s proposed allocation, which includes N25 billion for capital, N14.5 billion for overhead, and N37 billion for personnel costs.

The initial proposal from the Federal Government’s Budget Office was N43.1 billion, with a breakdown of N37 billion for personnel, N4.7 billion for overhead, and N1.2 billion for capital projects. The EFCC’s detailed costs encompass N2.6 billion for vehicle procurement and N1.7 billion for international travels. However, the budget office, in its final approval, eliminated N2.6 billion for vehicles, N11 billion for office construction, and N2.6 billion for security equipment. The approved budget also reduced the proposed N1.7 billion for foreign trips to N563.2 million.

“From the realistic point of view, what we think is, it will be good for us to work…because if we ‘manage’ to investigate and prosecute crime, you (lawmakers) will also ‘manage’ to abuse us that we are not working,” he said

“So, we don’t want to receive such an attack (criticisms) from you and we don’t want to ‘manage’. That is why we increased it (capital expenditure) to N25 billion which we think will suffice for us to operate in the year 2024,” he said
